Oncology Massage in South Lake Tahoe: Safe Care During & After Cancer Treatment

Massage during or after cancer treatment isn't something every therapist is prepared to offer. It requires a different level of knowledge, sensitivity, and adaptability — and when done right, it can meaningfully improve quality of life at one of the most physically and emotionally demanding times in a person's life.

Caylea has completed specialty training in oncology massage and works regularly with clients who are in active treatment, recovering from surgery, managing long-term side effects, or navigating life after cancer.

What Is Oncology Massage?

Oncology massage is massage therapy that has been specifically adapted for people affected by cancer. It is not a separate modality so much as a thoughtful modification of standard massage practice — adjusting pressure, positioning, site selection, and timing based on each client's unique medical situation.

A well-trained oncology massage therapist understands how cancer and its treatments — chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy, hormone therapy — affect the body, and how to work safely and effectively within those realities.

Why Standard Massage Isn't Always Appropriate

Many standard massage techniques are not appropriate for clients in treatment or recovery without modification. Common contraindications and areas requiring caution include:

  • Lymphedema or lymphedema risk — pressure and direction of strokes must be carefully managed near areas where lymph nodes have been removed or irradiated
  • Radiation sites — skin in and around radiation fields is often fragile, sensitive, and easily irritated
  • Surgical sites and implants — areas of recent surgery, port sites, or reconstruction require specific positioning and avoidance
  • Bone metastases — deep pressure over affected areas is contraindicated
  • Medication effects — certain chemotherapy agents cause peripheral neuropathy, increased bleeding risk, or heightened skin sensitivity that must be accounted for

This is why specialty training matters. It's not about applying less pressure across the board — it's about knowing specifically what to adjust and why, for each individual client on each individual day.

What Clients Experience

Oncology massage clients often describe a sense of profound relief — not just physical, but emotional. For people whose bodies have been subjected to difficult treatments and clinical procedures, receiving skilled, gentle, intentional touch in a calm and supportive setting can feel restorative in ways that are difficult to articulate.

Research supports this. Studies have consistently shown that oncology massage can reduce pain, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and depression associated with cancer and its treatment. It does not treat cancer itself, but it can meaningfully improve the experience of going through treatment and recovery.

Who This Service Is For

Oncology massage at Summit Bodywork is appropriate for:

  • Clients currently undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy
  • Those recovering from cancer surgery, including mastectomy and reconstruction
  • Clients managing ongoing side effects such as neuropathy, fatigue, or lymphedema
  • Cancer survivors at any stage of recovery

Sessions are always preceded by a thorough intake conversation. Caylea reviews your diagnosis, treatment history, current medications, and any specific areas of concern before beginning — and the plan is revisited at each visit as your situation evolves.

In-Studio and Mobile Options

Oncology massage is available both in-studio at Elevate Wellness Center in South Lake Tahoe and as a mobile session at your home or accommodation. Mobile is especially valuable for clients whose energy or mobility makes travel difficult.
